Medvedev Battles Through Slow Start to Reach Dubai Quarter-finals

In a rollercoaster encounter that lasted two hours and one minute, Medvedev found himself struggling to find his rhythm early on, particularly on his serve, winning just 53 percent of points behind his first delivery in the opening set

Top seed Daniil Medvedev showcased his resilience on Wednesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as he fought back from a sluggish start to defeat Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, securing his spot in the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 for the second time.

In a rollercoaster encounter that lasted two hours and one minute, Medvedev found himself struggling to find his rhythm early on, particularly on his serve, winning just 53 percent of points behind his first delivery in the opening set.

However, the Russian ace managed to turn the tide in his favor with a display of sheer determination and unwavering focus.

Reflecting on his slow start, Medvedev admitted, “I went on court and was not feeling right. I was too nervous and too tight, which does not happen often to me. I was making a lot of mistakes and had nerves.”

Despite the initial setbacks, Medvedev remained composed, knowing that a change in approach was imperative to turn the match in his favor.

“Sometimes it takes a set to calm down and if I continue to do what I did in the first set, that is not going to work. I just had to change, to be more calm, and if that doesn’t work it is his day, but it worked,” he added.

The turning point came in the second set when Medvedev, known for his aggressive baseline game, unleashed a barrage of powerful groundstrokes, breaking Sonego’s serve in the eighth game to level the match.

Buoyed by the momentum shift, Medvedev continued to dominate in the decisive set, breaking twice to seal the victory and extend his winning streak in Dubai to seven matches.

Having previously clinched the title in 2023, Medvedev’s familiarity with the courts in Dubai undoubtedly played a crucial role in his comeback victory.

Looking ahead, the 28-year-old will face off against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter-finals, following the Spaniard’s advancement after NextGenATP Czech Jakub Mensik was forced to retire at 6-7(7), 0-1.

For Medvedev, this tournament marks his return to competitive action since his heartbreaking defeat in the Australian Open final in January, where he squandered a two-sets-to-love lead against Italian Jannik Sinner.

Eager to put the disappointment behind him, Medvedev has set his sights on a strong showing in Dubai, reaffirming his status as one of the top contenders on the ATP Tour.

As the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships progresses, fans can expect more thrilling encounters and captivating performances from Medvedev and the rest of the field as they vie for glory in one of the most prestigious events on the ATP calendar.
