St Kitts and Nevis: Diplomat Sonia Boddie-Thompson featured on the International Day of Women of Multilaterals Tweet from the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the OAS.
As per the updates, The Director-General of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Ms Audrey Azoulay, has conveyed a message on the auspicious occasion of the International Day of Women in Multilateralism on 25 January 2023.
Audrey stated in her remarks, “By proclaiming this International Day at the 41st session of the General Conference, in 2021, our Member States wanted to celebrate the women not only at UNESCO but at all multilateral institutions dedicate themselves daily to building peace and ensuring sustainable development”.
“Celebrating their achievements and accomplishments, their opinions and their devotion to the cause of building peace also holds the meaning of drawing awareness to the inequality gap which in too many contexts and aspects continues to exist between women and men”, said Audrey.
Furthermore, she also added, “At the current rate, it would take us more than 130 years to reach parity in our societies, according to the World Economic Forum. Equal rights cannot wait”.
However, the UNSECO has considered the matter of gender equality as their global priority to fight gender inequalities at their very root.
The authorities have stated that breaking down the old stereotypes deeply ingrained in the social fabric and building equality through multilateralism implies acknowledging.
“As we are doing today, the role of women in multilateralism and seeing to it that all who want to work for change draw inspiration from these women”, noted UNESCO Director Audrey.
Audrey further extended her statement and pointed out that the matter is urgent, as evidenced by a recent UNESCO survey of women journalists, who constitute one of the professional groups most affected by these phenomena.
As per the surveys, around 73% of the women reported having been subjected to online violence in the course of their work. “And when women are targeted because they are women, a certain view of public debate and a fundamental requirement for democracy is also undermined”, said survey reports.
UNESCO Head Audrey conveyed that, On 25 January, a global dialogue entitled “Online Gendered Disinformation: What Are the Solutions?” was held.
During the global dialogue meeting, several debates on the subject will feed into our ongoing work to establish principles for regulating digital platforms to provide information as a public good in the digital age while preserving freedom of expression.
As per the sources, UNESCO is organizing a major conference at Headquarters; a number of representatives of government bodies, along with decision-makers, civil society and digital platforms, will take part and will be discussing the principles of social-network regulation.
