DWC to manage over 1000 flights amid closure of runway of Dubai International Airport

Dubai World Central (DWC), the second airport of Dubai, will control over 1000 flights every week during the closure of the northern runway at Dubai International Airport.

Dubai World Central (DWC), the second airport of Dubai, will control over 1000 flights every week during the closure of the northern runway at Dubai International Airport.

The World’s busiest airport for international travel, Dubai International Airport (DXB), will be closing one of its two runaways for almost 45 days, from May 9 to June 22.

Most DWC flights are presently being functioned by carriers Spice Jet, Gulf Air, FlyDubai and Indigo.

CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, said, “The planning of this essential infrastructure project was carefully done to reduce disruption to our passengers and assure our partners across the Dubai aviation community are working seamlessly to support the highest safety and visitor experience standards at both Dubai International and Dubai World Central airports.”

During this period, essential services and facilities at Dubai World Central Airport will be completely functional to meet the requirements and expectations of visitors, he further added.

On Monday, Air India Express reported that it would operate some of its flights from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport and Sharjah in May and June because of the runway closure.

Air India Express had tweeted, “Due to the northern runway closure at Dubai International Airport during May & June 2022, some flights will be diverted to Sharjah and Al Maktoum International Airport (Dubai World Central – DWC) during this period.”

The northern runway renovation project involves asphalting around 160,000 tons of asphalt and 30,000 cubic meters of concrete to further reinforce and flatten the runway alongside walkways.

Around 264 kilometers of branch cables will be changed, and over 4,400 units of runway lighting fixtures will be elevated using economic and environmentally friendly technologies.

In 2014, the northern runway underwent the same development, while the southern runway was recently renovated in 2019.

The northern runway renovation project comes under the framework of Dubai Airport’s actions and continuous dedication to improving the security and safety of travellers. It also strives to provide an excellent travel experience, in line with its efforts to enhance the capacity at Dubai International Airport.
